Friday, June 10, 2016

Another hot day, and yep we're headed to Savannah!!

Once again, we parked at the Visitors Center, grabbed our tickets, and hopped on the Old Town Trolley...

Today we are going to explore the City Market, Historic River Street and all parts in between.

Sights from the trolley...

The Savannah College of Art and Design

electric car, anyone? in a city so steeped in history, this
charging station looked out of place

Savannah's police station is the oldest continuous use police station in the country

Zunzi's is rated one of the best sandwich shops in the country

total extent of the inside, no bigger than a closet

Soon, we arrived at the City Market...the City  Market is a four block open-air market since the 1700's
with shopping and dining in restored warehouses.

we were grateful for the clouds; they offered shade!

after walking around for awhile, we stopped for lunch at the City
Market Cafe...

it was delicious!!

We left the market area and began our walk to the Savannah River...

what else is there to do on a hot day but play in the water!

Savannah native, Johnny Mercer, was a lyricist, composer, performer, philanthropist. He wrote
nearly 1,400 songs, with the most famous being "Moon River."

Soon, we arrived at Historic River Street...

The streets are lined with shops...

with several streets leading from Bay Street (which sits on a bluff over the river)
 down to the river...

As you walk, or drive down one of the streets to the river, there are alleys
that run behind the streets. These walkways, along with the alleys
(which are known as "Factors Walks") were used for storage
and removal of large cotton bales.

We left the shops and walked along the Savannah River...

notice the cannons? they're fake. this was once the location
of a fort. fake cannons were used to make the enemy think the Patriots
had more guns than what they actually did. It worked.

what goes down, must go up on these historic stairs

here we go!

We walked along Bay Street for a bit...

the Cotton Exchange. fortunes were made and lost here.

US Customs House

and then to the Old Pirates House. the Pirates House (now a restaurant)
is the oldest standing building in Savannah. Associated with Savannah's
maritime history and Robert Lewis Stevenson's "Treasure Island," it was built in 1754.

the white portion of the house is the original, built in 1754

what's a pirate house without a pirate?

we then continued walking over to James Oglethorpe Square...

we were getting hot..we decided it was time to head to Leopold's for ice cream..

along the way we encountered Mr. Wesley...

Leopold's is known far and wide for their ice cream. best we've ever had!!

Ice cream was the best way to end our visit to Savannah!!
