Our Summer Travels ~ New Orleans ~ Ferry, Quarter and Square!

Wednesday, May 27, 2016

Overcast, fairly low humidity and warm, but not hot. A perfect day to visit the French Quarter!

From where we're staying at the state park, the ferry is the quickest and by far the easiest way to get to Jackson Square and the French Quarter. We headed out early for Algiers Point to pick up the ferry.

Algiers Point is the second oldest neighborhood in New Orleans. And is a short (eight minute)
 ferry ride to the Riverfront.

one of the cool restaurants in Algiers Point

Algiers Point is populated with homes dating back to the 1840's; it still has the feel of a quiet
 19th century small town...

The ferry leaves Algiers Point on the half hour...

up the stairs and through the building...to the ferry we went

we made it! the ferry terminal at Canal & River Road

From the ferry terminal (Canal and River Road), you can pick up a street car to go up Canal Street. We chose to walk along the river to Cafe du Mond, about a one and one half mile walk...

Sights along the river...

We walked around Jackson Square...

the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France, (also called St. Louis
Cathedral) is the oldest cathedral in continuous use in the U.S.

house of the rising sun. legend has it that this is the brothel that inspired the song
(the two earliest recordings date back to 1930's Appalachia). many people believe
that this was a women's prison that had a rising sun on the gate.

Ursuline Convent; oldest building in the Mississippi Valley, completed in 1752

We made our way to Canal Street to the ferry...

of course I found a yarn shop!!

heading back to Algiers Point

We loved each of our trips to the downtown area. The ferry made
transportation fun and easy. We will miss the sights, sounds
 and food of New Orleans!

Til next time,
